Gillian Dawson Captain Loreto PP Golf Society 2020
Back in the 1930’s the Loreto nuns in Loreto Stephens Green, used to encourage Loreto girls coming to Dublin for the first time to drop into their convent once a week for a coffee and a chat with other Loreto girls also living and working in Dublin.
Through this weekly meeting, many friendships developed and in addition, out of these weekly meeting three Loreto sports clubs were formed.
Loreto Hockey Club, Loreto Cycling Club and the Loreto Past Pupils Golf Society. The first annual golf outing took place in Woodenbridge Golf Club in 1942. At the first golf out approximately 25 Loreto girls from all over Ireland came together to play in the golf competition.
Some arrived by car and other travelled to Woodenbridge by train. Those travelling by train had to get the train-driver to make an unscheduled stop when the train was beside Woodenbridge golf club.
Mrs David Frame very kindly offered to put up a Perpetual Trophy for the winner of the annual golf outing. This trophy was in memory of his young daughter a very talented golfer who tragically died a few years earlier. The first winner of winner of the trophy was Ms M.S. O’Reilly.
The annual Loreto Past Pupils Golf Society outing has continued every year since the inaugural outing in 1942. Each year over 100 golfers come from all over Ireland to play in this event.
We are very proud that out society is now recognised as the oldest Lady’s Golf Society in Ireland. For over the last 60 years the annual golf outing has taken place in Hermitage Golf Club.
