On a very sunny Friday, 17th May 2013, in Hermitage Golf Club, the 71st. annual golf outing and dinner, took place. It was attended by over 100 past pupils from almost all the Loreto schools in Ireland.
Under the careful eye of Mary O’Gorman, Anne Murray and Mandy Gillen, registration went smoothly and amid lots of laughter and excitement, armed with Goody Bags, the Loreto Girls made their way to their appointed tee boxes and with the sound of the Hooter, the golf began.
Hermitage was as challenging as ever, but with the days glorious sunshine, even the worse golf was enjoyable. The winning scores were remarkably high and prizes were well earned.
Once the beautifying was done, all gathered in the bar, to renew old friendships and general catching up was done. We were honoured this year to have the Lady Captain of Hermitage Geraldine Rodgers (long standing member of our society) welcome us to Hermitage.
During the meal, we were address by Sr. Noelle Corscadden, Provincial leader of Loreto Ireland. Sr. Noelle spoke about the great work and the progress of the Loreto School in South Sudan (Loreto Rumbek) which she helped set up in 2006.
On the night we held a raffle in support of the great work going on in Rumbek. In addition we also auctioned a signed cap from world number two Rory McIllroy, (which Geraldine Rodgers very kindly sourced and donated). A very pleasant way to raise much needed funds.
President elect of the Union, Emily Banville, spoke about the work of the Loreto Past Pupils Union and she also presented the Gross Prize which the LPPU have donated each year since this Society first started in 1942.
On the night, we were delighted to welcome Hugh McGauran, of Home Instead Senior Care, (our main sponsor for this year’s event) to his first ever Loreto Past Pupils Annual Golf outing. Hugh was rightfully there on the evening as he is also a former “Beaufort pupil” – Hugh attended Beaufort until he was eight years old.
The golfing results were announced and the prizes were presented to all the winners. Congrats to the overall winner, Beaufort’s Bronagh O’Flanagan who just beat the Green’s Adrienne McCann (on the back nine) with a very impressive score of 39 points.
Many thanks, to all who helped to make the day such a fantastic success. In no particular order many thanks to Anne Murray, Mandy Gillan, Mary O’Gorman, Bronwyn O’Donnell, Deidre Naughton, SarahMarie Feighan, Stephanie Graham, Joan Merrigan for all their hard work.
Finally I want to say what a great honour it was to be Captain of the 71st Golf Outing. I also want to say a very big thank you to all the Loreto Past Pupil Golfers who attended and who made it such a great day out for us “loreto girls”.
Ger Ryan – Lady Captain, 2013.
